While Audi’s first fully-electric vehicle offered in the U.S. didn’t enter production until 2019, the company actually created its first hybrid concept vehicle way back in 1989 with the 100 Avant duo hybrid concept (though only 10 of these units were ever built).

Production of electrified vehicles may be relatively new for the automaker, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t taking their place at the EV table seriously. By 2025, Audi of America aims for one-third of its overall portfolio to be electrified, with vehicles developed on four distinct architectures. These include the compact MEB platform; the midsize and large PPE platform; the J1 sports car platform developed with Porsche; and the MLB evo SUV platform.

Audi’s all-electric designation is “e-tron,” while TFSI e is the designation for plug-in hybrid vehicles. Audi has four all-electric offerings and two PHEVs; the company’s A8 TFSI e plug-in hybrid full-size luxury sedan was discontinued going into the 2022 model line.

Audi offers its plug-in hybrid model drivers four driving modes. “EV” is for fully electric driving, while “Hybrid” can be chosen for an efficient combination of both drive system types. Drivers can choose “Hold” when they want to conserve their remaining available electric energy. In “Charge” mode, the combustion engine charges the battery as they drive.

When charging by cable, the maximum charging capacity with alternating current for these vehicles is 7.4 kW. Audi also offers customers its quite compact e-tron charging system for home and a mode 3 cable when they’re out.

Here’s what to know about the latest electric Audi models (base trims as of Q4 2022):

e-tron SUV – Ten years after making its premiere at the International Motor Show in Germany in 2009, production on Audi’s all-electric e-tron SUV began in 2019. The e-tron is Audi’s first full-electric model, and today the manufacturer offers SUV, Sportback and GT (coupe) options, as well as its newest “Q4” SUV model. The Audi e-tron SUV was one of the first electric SUVs available when it hit the market in 2019. It’s still considered to be one of the most comfortable and luxurious electric SUVs around, but its range leaves something to be desired compared to other similar electrified vehicles.

e-tron Sportback – A sportier version of its e-tron SUV cousin, the e-tron Sportback gets a little boost in the performance department while giving up a bit of cargo capacity and range. Despite its relatively low range compared to competitors, critics laud the Sportback for its comfort, tech and luxury features.

e-tron GT – Audi’s first crack at an all-electric sedan is striking to look at and is packed with some of the most cutting-edge technology, including a configurable digital gauge cluster and wireless phone charging. However, it doesn’t have much in the way of storage, and while performance attributes are good, they’re nothing to write home about for a vehicle at this price range.

e-tron Q4 – Audi’s answer to offering an EV at a competitive price point, the Q4 gives drivers a little bit of everything but doesn’t particularly excel in any areas either. Critics call this crossover a comfortable drive, featuring a nod to the company’s luxurious roots in the interior. It’s also one of the quietest EV driving experiences out there.

Q5 TFSI e – The 2022 Q5 TFSI e is a plug-in hybrid crossover that got an upgarded battery this model year, stepping up its electric-only driving range to 23 miles (up from 19 in 2021 model). In a few cities – including Portland, Oregon, Las Vegas, New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco – Audi also offers a new “Traffic Light Information” system, which predicts when traffic lights will turn green.

A7 TFSI e Quattro – This is one of the few midsize luxury hatchback sedans available on the market with an electrification option. While its price tag is considerably higher than some of its competitors, it offers a combination of style, comfort, safety and tech that isn’t quite found anywhere else. Debuting in 2021, today the plug-in hybrid version comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 17.9 kWh battery.
